Dinner wars

We've gone through more than a week on dinner wars. He starts off well and then midway through dinner, he'll start playing up. It would be the stick-the-spoon-in-mouth-and-twiddle or scoop-3-grains-of-rice-and-nibble. And until his dada threatens the naughty cushion, he'll still continue. Wait .. he'll still continue on occasions and it'll end up with no more dinner and loads of wails.

What are we doing wrong here ? We've talked to him nicely and reminded him of good behaviour means he gets special treats. Still the defiance !

I thought maybe he's eaten too much for tea at the childcare centre but yesterday (saturday), he didn't get any tea and yet at dinner time, he played up. sigh ...

Hi mama
I had similer problems with Jon.
He used to play up every meal time.
We had to just take his food away, & make him sit still & wait until we had finished our meal. No TV while we were eating. If he screamed then, we would put him into his room with nothing to do until he had calmed down. Yes I know that the screaming is loud, but you have to ignore it. Ear plugs are good.
They only play up because they can see that it bothers you so they know that they can get you rattled, & all children are experts in the art of parent baiting. They are born with that skill.
If he is hungry he will eat. So don't worry about him not getting enough food. Look at Jon now!!!!
Children have to try to learn to control their life, this is one way they can influence their space.
We had so many battles in the early years it wasn't true. Jon was so hyperactive because of colours & additives, it was a nightmare. Orange jucie was his big problem & he still doesn't eat oranges even now. Because of how they effect him. But you do need to establish the rules & boundrys or the children take over.
Its not easy being a parent!
We had to go to the school many times because he was so disruptive.
We have suvived & we all still eat our meal together.
